If you aren’t a local, you may not know that that St. Augustine is actually the oldest city in America; not just the oldest city in Florida, but the oldest city in the United States. The city of St. Augustine was formed in September of 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, of Spain, a Spanish explorer and conquistador.
More than 20 acres in size, our photography event included capturing images of Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest fort in the United States. At over 300 years old, this fort, the oldest structure in St. Augustine, was built to defend Spain’s claims to their newly founded St. Augustine, the first successful European settlement in Florida.
Additionally, we captured pictures of the pedestrian-only St. George Street, which was full of great restaurants, bars and boutique shops of all kinds. This historic street, not too far from the oldest roadway in America, had no shortage of street vendors, guitarists, drummers, snake handlers and was actually great for people-watching too.Â
In the highlights captured below, you’ll get some insight into these attractions, to include the Cathedral Basilica St. Augustine, Flagler College and the fact that we finally got to meet Captain Mayhem!Â
